Beowulf - Analysis Of The Epic Essays - Beowulf, Geats, Free Essays

Beowulf - Analysis Of The Epic Essays - Beowulf, Geats, Free Essays Beowulf - Analysis of the Epic The Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf is the most important work of Old English literature, and is well deserved of the distinction. The epic tells the story of a hero, a Scandinavian prince named Beowulf, who rids the Danes of the monster Grendel, a descendent of Cain, and of his exploits fighting Grendel?s mother and a Dragon. Throughout the epic, the Anglo-Saxon story teller uses many elements to build a certain depth to the characters. Just a few of the important character elements in Beowulf are Wealth & Honor, Biblical & Paganistic, and Man vs. Wild themes. Many of the characters in Beowulf are, like in most epics, defined by their status. But, in addition to status, the Anglo-Saxon culture also adds an element of honor. To the Anglo-Saxons, a character?s importance, as well as their wealth and status, where measured not only in monetary terms, but it was also measured in terms of honor, fame, and accomplishments. Hrothgar, king of the Danes, is one example of the Anglo-Saxon measurement of importance in Beowulf. In Canto 1 the story teller describes his wealth and importance, not as mounds of gold or jewels, but instead as his ability to ?[lead] the Danes to such glory.? and as his tendency to ?In battle, [leave] the common pasture untouched, and taking no lives.? Through this display of compassion for the commoner who doesn?t fight in battles, Hrothgar proves the full extent of his honor and therefore the extent of his wealth and status. Beowulf, the hero-prince, also proves his true wealth and status through his deeds as defender of the Danes.. As he fights and defeats Grendel, Beowulf Earns Fame and wealth from his companions, and from the Danes, but more importantly, he earns honor raising him to the level of an archetypal hero. Grendel, on the other hand, is the total opposite of Beowulf. He has no wealth, no honor, and he in infamous as an evil killer. This lack of wealth and honor defines Grendel as a symbol of evil and corruption. In addition to using Honor and wealth to define a character?s character, the story-teller(s) have incorporated alternating Biblical and Paganistic motifs in the epic-poem. The original Epic was obviously Paganistic due to the time period of it?s creation. But, as time wore on, the rewriting and touching up of the manuscripts by various sources including religious monks, caused the characters to have slight Christian characteristics. These Christian themes have become very important to the epic to add am element of depth that wouldn?t be possible in modern times due to the lost of the Anglo-Saxon culture and beliefs. An example of the Biblical motif in Beowulf is Grendel. Grendel it biblically described as evil in this excerpt: [ Grendel] was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born Of Cain, murderous creatures banished By God, punished forever for the crime Of Abel?s death. The Almighty drove Those demons out, and their exile was bitter, Shut away from men; they split Into a thousand forms of evilspirits And feinds, goblins, monsters, giants, A brood forever opposing the Lord?s Will, and again and again defeated. The Biblical reference in the epic has become a modern day archetypal motif, and serves to give the listener an idea of the extent of Grendel?s pure evil and gives a logical explanation for Grendel?s murderous behavior. This example, not only shows the evil in Grendel?s nature, but also the torture in his heart caused by his Banishment from God. It serves to give the reader an idea of why Grendel would kill the Danes for no reason other than their happiness. Beowulf also has a religious motif to his character. One example of this is in Canto 6 line 381 in which Hrothgar states, ?Our Holy Father had sent [Beowulf] as a sign of His grace, a mark of His favor, to help us defeat Grendel and end that terror.? This religious description shows Beowulf as a sort of messiah sent by god to save man from evil. But, more than that, since Beowulf is in fact not a messiah, this description shows the good in Beowulf?s heart and the purpose of his mission. Another Biblical reference in Beowulf

Comparisons of two Information Security Management Frameworks Essay

Comparisons of two Information Security Management Frameworks - Essay Example Security responsibilities in an organization are all-embracing that is why it is important to associate the employees in formulating the program. SQL information system management used in health care The health care information technology system in several instances is predisposed to various risks and threats among other vulnerabilities. The situation gets worse when such vices are channeled towards the information system targeting patients with life threatening conditions. Some of the risks, threats, and vulnerabilities include and are not limited to accessing public internet without authority, hacking resulting to penetration of IT infrastructure, and fire torching primary data (Rodrigues 56). In most instances, health-care centers have put in place web-based patient and physician portals to enable visibility in the organizations financial and clinical data. The physician portal is normally used for various purposes including viewing radiology and laboratory results, obtaining elec tronic medical records and completing charts. Similarly, the patient portal enables accessing patient’s information including test results, billing information, prescribed medication, scheduled appointments, and medical conditions. However, if secure coding of the web application is not implemented, vulnerabilities such as SQL injections and cross-site scripting are likely to occur. This occurs based on actions of exploitation from unauthorized users who may compromise sensitive information confidentiality via the internet (Gentile 69). Notable tools employed in the identification of healthcare related online risks include the Web inspect scanner by Hewlett, Web vulnerability scanner by Acunetix and the watchfire Appscan by IBM. Application of the above systems would then go ahead in selective selections of authentic databases, passwords, and user identities as far as the internet security is concerned. In order to tackle various threats and risks, sections of clinical system s have adopted wireless networks, which they use to present and obtain information at the point of care. For example, this has been applied at bedsides (Gentile 41). The wireless network policy enables the use of wireless network infrastructure to handle patient’s information systems. This kind of system with proper coding plays a significant role in ensuring that there is integrity, confidentiality, and reliable availability of patient’s information. If proper securing of information is not enhanced under such circumstances, it would greatly affect the organizations internal systems. The wireless network system ensures that proper regulations and procedures are put in place to handle the patient’s information systems. These include performance logs and network security. Training of steps in this field would then enable justified users such as permitted staff to understand encryptions and authentication of wireless mechanisms that are in use. To identify where u nauthorized access points and rogue users are located, system administrators should use wireless scanning tools. On the same note, hospitals offering free access to wireless network for the public must always ensure that the person accessing information is

Dental insurance Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words

Dental insurance - Article Example The core issue discussed relies on the information gathered with reference to the level in which the respondents accept or reject the of the thirty Current dental terminology codes (CDT) (Stafford et.al, 2010). Scholarly research insisted that among all the adults, the privately insured were more likely to have treated carries. This is contrary with reference to the case of the uninsured. Statistically, scholarly information indicates that 68.5% of private insurance and 56.9% had dental insurance. According to the study, above 80 % dental exams acceptance rate was recorded, inclusive of the insured and uninsured. First, the exams taken orally were highly rejected. The results of the study depict that most of the insured persons indicated a high rate of acceptance toward oral prophylaxis procedure (Stafford et.al, 2010). On the other side, the uninsured show less acceptance rate towards treatments. Statistically, the insured show 90% acceptance, against the 74.6 acceptance rate. Overall statistics gathered from the study indicate that 72% of all the patients accepted the treatments. Specifically, 75% of the insured persons accepted treatment. Alternatively, 68% of the uninsured rejected it (Stafford et.al, 2010). However, the results dictate that there is an affirmative correlation between the independent and dependent variable. Ideally, the independent variable is the status of insurance, and the dependent variable is the dental treatment. Stafford,  W.  L., Edenfield,  S.  M., Coulton,  K.  M., & Beiter,  T. (2010). Mexican society Essay Example for Free

Mexican society Essay Mariano Azuela’s, The Underdogs, is full of characters that represent different sections of the Mexican society at the time of the Mexican Revolution around 1910 and each responds to the war according to their own circumstances and needs. The first such character is Demetrio Macias, a peace loving Indian, representing the poor peasants. His only interest is to protect what little he has. He is drawn into the revolution when he is being hunted by the soldiers of a political leader and he has to abandon his wife and child and watch the soldiers destroy his house. Demetrio responds by putting together a band of sharpshooting bandits who are wanted for various crimes they have committed At the start, Demetrio is full of noble ideas and wants to fight for the poor while taking from the rich, something like Robin Hood. The group is focused and meets with success. However as his group grows larger it becomes more difficult to control, because with each victory comes power and with that the demands. For instance, after each successful battle they feel justified in taking all girls above twelve years of age to â€Å"service† them. As time goes on, the rebels themselves forget what they are fighting for and start taking from the rich and poor alike Luis Cervantes, is a student portraying the educated middle class. He is captured by Demetrio’s men and manages to convince them that is a deserter of Huertas army and was actually trying to join them. He is unhappy with the treachery, and corruption in the Huertas’ army. The unnecessary meanness of the soldiers, rape, burning of homes, looting, torture, murdering of children. 1 Luis is a young man with ideals and a vision for the future. He believes that doing away with the crooked politicians will make Mexico a better place for everyone. While he imparts his wisdom on the bandits, some of them speculate if that is indeed what they are really all about, while majority just dreams about the booty the next town will bring. Luis’ unsuccessful attempts at conveying his insight to the bandits eventually cause him to change his direction and go in search of a business venture instead. The next characters we meet in the story are two women, who symbolize the role of the fairer sex in the Mexican war. First there is Camilla, who provides services such as cooking, or caring for the wounded. Although initially she comes across as a meek person, we see eventually that she is really a strong woman who has a major role to play in Demetrio’s life. Finally, there is â€Å"War Paint. † A very jealous and bold woman, who is always ready to rob anyone in her path. She uses sex to manipulate men and get what she wants. For example, at one point in the story Demetrio is ready to take her to a hotel after drinking heavily. She challenges his manhood by saying that a real man of his standing would find the best house in town, take it over by force if necessary and spend the night there. Thus, they spend the night in one of the best houses in town, and War Paint proceeds to rob it after entertaining Demetrio. It seems to me that the only person somewhat sincere with the revolution is Demetrio. After all he is the only one not willing to run away. He stands his ground and fights for what he believes in, despite the fact that the importance and force of revolution had lost its steam, and knowing in the end that he is outnumbered and will not survive. 1Cogan, Allan . Augustine :: essays research papers

Midterm Exam Approaches to God 267 1) What do Luther, Aquinas, Augustine, Decartes, and Kierkeguard hold about the relationship between faith and reason? All of these great philosophers had varying views on the relationship between faith and reason. Martin Luther was a key historical figure and a key historical figure of his time. He rose to fame for his 95 thesis and is credited with bringing about the Protestant Reformation. Luther was a feidest- everything opens to faith with no regard to reason. He believed people were saved â€Å"by faith alone†. St Thomas Aquinas did not have the same views as Luther. He was a mitigated rationalist who believed in both faith and reason. Aquinas argued that reason preceded faith. St Thomas, a mendicant fryer, was a believer in the unity of truth. St Augustine of Hippo, a well respected, top-notch philosopher was one of the greatest thinkers of his time. The great Augustine was also a mitigated rationalist. Unlike Aquinas, Augustine believed faith preceded reason. He took ancient thought and applied it to the bible. He believed man was good, but not perfect. Augustine’s theory that faith precedes reason can be best summed up by citing his famous quote, â€Å"I believe in order that I may understand†. St Augustine was a giant in philosophy and continues to be studied today. Decartes, who invented the Cartesian Plain, wanted to make philosophy as precise as his beloved mathematics. He often related philosophy to the principles of geometry and fineness. Decartes operated out of the theory of doubt, he doubted everything. However he did not doubt the fact that he could think. He felt that he could not think without existing. Hence he came up with the notion â€Å"I think therefore I am.† Decartes ultimately pulled faith away from reason and completely separated their relationship. Kierkeguard was the father of modern existentialism. He stresses the individual as an existentialist he created three levels. The first level was an aesthetic level, second was an ethical, in which one leads a good life, and the third and highest level was called the â€Å"leap of faith†, the religious level. 2) Is natural theology a science? Why or why not? When determining whether or not natural theology is a science or not, we encounter many different opinions. Some may argue yes, while others argue no. The definition of Philosophy comes into play here. Philosophy- the science which studies all things in their ultimate causes by the light of natural reason.
