Full height and drama Essay Example For Students
Full height and drama Essay Presumably all that Mary Shelley imagined when she first conceived the plot was a scientist chap who makes a man-creature-thingy which then goes around wreaking havoc and murdering all and sundry. The elaborate sub-plots, characters etcetera were all developed as she wrote. I may be wrong, but I doubt it. And where does all this stuff begin? Chapter Five. So where is the entire plot brought up from its knees to full height and drama? Chapter Five. And which is the most important chapter in the novel? Chapter Five. From the first paragraph we are thrown into a world of fast paced action. The monster lives. None of that I plugged Wire X into Socket 3, Wire Y into Socket 11, connected the inter-communicational cord to the conjoined lever, handled the stick and turned on the power stuff no, no! We arent treated to any sort of explanation as to how it works. Just death, instruments, life. Instruments, death, life. Death, life. Instruments, life. Life. I saw the dull yellow eye of the creature open; it breathed hard and a convulsive motion agitated its limbs. To change the subject a wee bit, if I had created a man-thing, even from dead bodies, I would try to love it. I mean to say, I created the dashed thing in the first place! But not so Victor Frankenstein. Oh, no. The poor sausage didnt give a thought to whether his creation was of a well meaning ugliness or nasty ugliness. Ugliness was, to Frankenstein, the be all and end all, alpha and omega and hm. Well, maybe tricolons can be a bit overused! In short, he didnt love it. This is evident in his reaction to Mr. Monster: the wretch, with his yellow skin and straight black lips forming a horrible contrast with his watery eyes and shrivelled complexion was enough to send him galloping out of the room to the sanctuary of his bedchamber. Later on during the night, Frankenstein is stopped from knitting up the ravelld sleeve of care as Macbeth would say by the entrance of his creation. Paying a moonlit visit to his newfound mummy, daddy and god, the poor thing (and this isnt perfectly clear from Frankensteins narration) tries to make friends with his master. He tries to speak, to smile and to touch him unsuccessfully of course. For dear old Victor is terrified. A cold dew is covering his forehead, his teeth chattered and every limb convulsed. In short, the dim yellow light of the moon, in illuminating the demoniacal corpse, had made a ghastly error. No longer just revolted with his creation, the sight of the frightful thing appearing suddenly on him like that made him petrified and cast him into the very agonies of terror. It made him feel like a little boy in an aeroplane who, finding an ugly elongated black object on his seat, decides that it might be quite fun to try to drop it down somebodys chimney. Throwing it out of the window is the work of a moment, and remorse only sets in when he sees half of London vanish in a cloud of smoke. Just like that little boy, he was overawed by the mere appearance of things. He allowed what he saw to influence his usually ice cold and shrewd judgment. He presumed that because he had blown up the House of Lords he had done wrong. But really, if he looked down underneath the cloud and the debris, he would have found a spark of goodness even in this, the worst of worst disasters. I dont think that bombs are as nasty as they are made out to be. .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 , .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .postImageUrl , .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 , .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5:hover , .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5:visited , .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5:active { border:0!important; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5:active , .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5 .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .u1d882933f4b27485397c00f3ee6f68b5:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: Merchant of Venice EssayI dont want one dropped on me admittedly, but just think of all the good one would do to the centre of London! Those ugly concrete towers, which cant be knocked down because they would be a health and safety hazard, would all be swiftly and cleanly removed. The population problem a few bombs would reduce our national head count quite a bit, and then wed be able to welcome with open arms any immigrants, thus avoiding nasty, vulgar international brawls. And the best point of all: if the House of Lords was blown up, the House of Commons would have gone too. So you see, Frankenstein was acting as superficially is it is possible for man to act. Clearly a shallow and vain man himself he is painting everyone with the same brush the brush of good looks. The only one he failed to paint was the one whom he himself created. And that is the monster in a nutshell Frankensteins creation; not very artistic. One can imagine the passport profile or perhaps its best not to. While on the subject of Frankenstein-the-man, perhaps a brief character study wouldnt be out of place? A Genevan and from a wealthy family, skipping lightly over his early childhood, through the death of his mother and his romantic entanglement with adopted sister Elizabeth, we find ourselves at Ingolstadt, a particularly outlandish university of the times. It is here that he creates the monster. Throughout the rest of the novel, every single member of his immediate circle will die, either at the hand or through the mechanisms of his creation. From his father to his servant-girl; from his close friend to Elizabeth (now his wife); and finally to his own death and the monsters suicide, his very life is haunted with dead bodies. It seems that his destiny is to be an impromptu curse upon whomever he knows; an undertakers dream. Oddly enough, this very fact gives us a huge insight into his character. One of his peculiar traits is to constantly refer to his destiny. When his brother William has been murdered and the servant Justine is about to be hanged he is tossed into the depths of self pity. Despair! he cries. Who dare talk of that? The poor victim, who on the morrow was to pass the awful boundary between life and death, felt not as I did, such deep and bitter agony. And really he is right. Justine will know no more, at least not in this world, whereas Frankenstein has an awful lot still coming to him before he dies. Of course, he doesnt know this yet and is only guessing but that only goes to prove that he is accepting fear, pain and terror as his due. He was going to be killed. That was what he told himself and that was what he believed. Later on in the novel he says the hour fixed for my destiny. In that hour I would die All this is very interesting, but what does it have to do with Chapter Five? The opening paragraph of Chapter Nine sets it quite nicely: I had begun life with benevolent intentions, and thirsted for the moment when I should put them in practice, and make myself useful to my fellow-beings. Now all was blasted: instead of that serenity of conscience, which allowed me to look back upon the past with self-satisfaction, and from thence to gather promise of new hopes, I was seized by remorse and the sense of guilt, which hurried me away to a hell of intense tortures, such as no language can describe. He felt ruled by what he saw as his destiny, and indeed the novel does go quite a way to supporting this idea. Basically, his feeling was that whatever he thought, said or did the same thing was always going to happen. However he treated his creation, the future could not be changed. The monster would turn bad. Frankenstein would die. .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf , .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .postImageUrl , .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .centered-text-area { min-height: 80px; position: relative; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf , .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf:hover , .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf:visited , .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf:active { border:0!important; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .clearfix:after { content: ""; display: table; clear: both; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf { display: block; transition: background-color 250ms; webkit-transition: background-color 250ms; width: 100%; opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #95A5A6; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf:active , .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf:hover { opacity: 1; transition: opacity 250ms; webkit-transition: opacity 250ms; background-color: #2C3E50; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .centered-text-area { width: 100%; position: relative ; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .ctaText { border-bottom: 0 solid #fff; color: #2980B9; font-size: 16px; font-weight: bold; margin: 0; padding: 0; text-decoration: underline; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .postTitle { color: #FFFFFF; font-size: 16px; font-weight: 600; margin: 0; padding: 0; width: 100%; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .ctaButton { background-color: #7F8C8D!important; color: #2980B9; border: none; border-radius: 3px; box-shadow: none; font-size: 14px; font-weight: bold; line-height: 26px; moz-border-radius: 3px; text-align: center; text-decoration: none; text-shadow: none; width: 80px; min-height: 80px; background: url(https://artscolumbia.org/wp-content/plugins/intelly-related-posts/assets/images/simple-arrow.png)no-repeat; position: absolute; right: 0; top: 0; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf:hover .ctaButton { background-color: #34495E!important; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .centered-text { display: table; height: 80px; padding-left : 18px; top: 0; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf-content { display: table-cell; margin: 0; padding: 0; padding-right: 108px; position: relative; vertical-align: middle; width: 100%; } .udc8e8d80d4c77f0b09b8073e444e02cf:after { content: ""; display: block; clear: both; } READ: A Christmas Carol By Charles Dickens EssayAll that is contrary to the opinion held by many that Frankenstein should be responsible for the monster. Just in passing, how ridiculous is it to hold opinions on what fictitious characters should have done? After all, if everyone in the novel was perfectly moral and upright there wouldnt be a plot! Unless it had been decreed by fate and nothing that anyone could do would be able to stop it No. The entire plot hinges around two things: the existence of the monster; the monsters desire for companionship. Both of these things cascade dramatically off Chapter Five. For the first one at least, it is blatantly obvious why I mean to say, if the monster hadnt been created it wouldnt exist. The second point however is the start of the main theme for the entire tale. Frankenstein shuns his son; his son goes off to find a friend. He finds a cottage in the woods. And in the cottage is a family with a blind old man.

Racial prejudice in football an Example of the Topic Government and Law Essays by
Racial prejudice in football Introduction This paper presents research on racial prejudice in football. The focus is specifically on racial prejudice among players in European soccer. Racial prejudice relates to discrimination of soccer players on the basis of their race. The discrimination can be through use of words and statements which are not race friendly as well as actions which are meant to discriminate against people of a given race. Need essay sample on "Racial prejudice in football" topic? We will write a custom essay sample specifically for you Proceed According to Stuart Sim (2008), Soccer is a very old game that can be traced to the ancient generation including the second century when Chinese were involved in kicking a leather ball through a small hole in a piece of silk cloth strung between two high poles. These were the primitive ages of soccer which has evolved over the decades to gain the current international frenzy witnessed in the modern world. Europe has distinguished itself as the home of the modern day soccer. The concept of buying players promoted by the leading football clubs in Europe and all over the world has led to players of different races and ethnic backgrounds converging in the same soccer team. It is the black players in European soccer clubs who have faced a substantial share of racial discrimination by the white players, funs and even some club administrators. University Students Very Often Tell EssayLab professionals: Who wants to write paper for me? Professional writers recommend: There Is Nothing Impossible For Essaylab Writers In other European nations like Germany, a section of the crowd attending football matches have been noticed showering insults at minority players mainly from Africa and Arab world. This is worsened if their team has lost the match to an opponent team where the minority player is playing for. This discrimination has not spared even African- American players who compete professionally in European leagues. These players give testimonies of having to suffer verbal and physical abuse because of their race both while in the field and when outside the field. It is very unfortunate that these nations continue to host major world soccer games like world cup. In addition, racial prejudice is not only a problem for the minority players but also non-white players who attend these matches. Racial discrimination is so entrenched in some cities that non-white visitors can not venture freely outside the confines of the stadium or their hotels into the town and the villages in fear of being abused bo th verbally and physically because of their race. Incidences of racial discrimination have always been overshadowed by the hooliganism associated with European soccer matches. There is however rising trends in racial slurs and racially charged incidents as a result of a number of factors including the increasing racial diversity of formerly all-white clubs. This has been promoted by big European clubs signing players from other nations outside Europe especially harnessing the great potential in Africa. It is the dream of every African soccer players to join these wealthy clubs due to lack of enough resources by African governments to support such talents. The prestigious lifestyles by Africans playing for these clubs are also a motivational model to other players. Growing resistance to immigration from African and Arab nations in several European countries has created some hatred and hostility among natives hence instigating racial prejudice. The tendency of race-related conflicts to grab headlines and greater scrutiny of such incidents to reverse such trends only serves to worsen racial prejudice. This is especially so when funs realize that they can cause a ruckus and perhaps upset a key opposing player with racial taunts .Racial tension also appears to be fueled by a lack of economic opportunities for whites. The whites blame this trend on black players whom they perceive to have come into their country and grabbed the existing opportunities. This leaves the minority players at the mercy of racist players and funs. Most incidences of racial discrimination pass unnoticed because they happen behind the curtains away from the concerned authorities and some racially discriminated players are just too scared to complain about the natives because they are numerical disadvantage in a new country. (Stuart Sim, 2008). Racial prejudice in soccer has been identified as a very serious threat to the football clubs and the social setup in this world that is increasingly undergoing globalization. (Stuart Sim ,2008). This has even prompted the emergence of various antiracism organizations like Kick It Out, a London-based organization which is a member of Football Against Racism in Europe (FARE) alongside other organizations from thirteen European countries dedicated to fighting racism in soccer. Such organizations have staged antiracism campaigns targeting soccer funs that are found of launching racist attacks on minority players of a rival soccer club. Such overt racial prejudices take the form of harassment of the player, physical and verbal assaults, spitting at the players car or name calling. Such incidences have made minority players to fear for their lives and even explore the possibility of foregoing the luxurious opportunities and going back to their respective countries. Stories are told of players who have been subjected to serious humiliation like funs of the opponent clubs stocking the players after a much and shaking their cars, spitting on the cars, throwing food at the player and punching their cars all bec ause this player is of a different race. Funs who sit near the field have also been suspended and fined for unfriendly gestures like monkey chants, using annoying names to intimidate the player and even punching the player who he goes to throw the ball or when he tries to defend himself by responding to their insults. However, some people believe that these are actions of just a handful of people who are out to spoil it all for other people. Increasing immigration which has led to more players of color in Europe has incited some of the racial tension across Europe. This can be illustrated by the riots which were experienced in the Paris suburbs which revealed the high level of immigrants' frustration due to lack of economic opportunity, especially for young people. This trend has lead to increasing fears and concerns in Europe concerning the soaring immigration. Most experts and players blame the European countries for tolerating racial prejudice, a fact that is so disappointing when comparing with the situation in nations like the U.S where racial discrimination is considered a vice and a taboo. According to Stuart Sim (2008), the globalization of soccer has led to increased diversity on the field, which has led to dissent from some fans in Europe. It is obvious that many of the world's top pro teams are in Europe and are led by players of color. For instance, defending World Cup champion Brazil's Ronaldinho, the 2004 and 2005 world player of the year, plays for newly crowned European club champion FC Barcelona in Spain, as does Sweden's Henri k Larsson. France's Thierry Henry and the Ivory Coast's Kolo Toure led English club Arsenal to the European club final. Ghana's Michael Essien and the Ivory Coast's Didier Drogba helped Chelsea win the English Premier League title. A country like German tried to resist this trend for a very long time but gave in by the signing of Ghanaian soccer player Gerald Asamoah which led to successive signing of other black players. This trend can not change any sooner because these football clubs have the money while the minority players have the needed talents to push the clubs to stardom. These successful players however are not spared from racial discrimination as the fans sometimes whistle, booed and make monkey noises at them. For example in a European Champions League qualifier against Red Star Belgrade in Serbia and Montenegro in 2004, Beasley who is a black player was welcomed rudely. When he touched the ball, the media reported that the fans whistled, booed and made monkey noises at him. He encountered the same experiences at road games in the Netherlands. Most of the black players who have ever played for European soccer clubs testify that racial discrimination in most European countries is direct and bluntly displayed. For instance a black soccer player can be denied access to a restaurant a restaurant in pretext that he is not welcome into the private party while the main message is to tell the player that he is in a territory of a different race. The trend of racial discrimination tends to increase in the present days as demonstrated by various incidences experienced by black players. The worlds top player from Cameroon Samuel Eto'o, who plays for FC Barcelona, threatened to walk out of a game after being showered with monkey chants and peanuts from opposing fans. Another incident happened when Marc Zoro, who is from the Ivory Coast and plays for the Italian club Messina, picked up the ball and threatened to walk off the field because of racist chants from Inter Milan fans. Some players have also been involved in promotion of racial prejudice especially against foreign players in their native clubs. Paulo Di Canio, a striker for the Italian club Lazio, was suspended for giving fans a straight-arm, Nazi-style salute. When asked about his behavior, he claimed he was supporting fascism, not racism. (Stuart Sim, 2008). In a move to fight racial prejudice, major steps have been taken by both political and religious leaders, including Pope Benedict XVI. An anti-racism message from the pope was read to fans before an exhibition game between Italy and Germany aimed at creating awareness on the consequences of racial prejudice. Educational programs and activist groups such as FARE are prominent in Europe. There also have been anti-racism advertising efforts such as the Nike-affiliated "Stand up, Speak up" campaign led by France's Henry, who was the target of a racist slur by Spanish coach Luis Aragones. Aragones who was fined $87,000 (U.S.) and a public apology which sent a message of how serious an individuals actions can cost him if they promote racial prejudice. (Stuart Sim, 2008). Nike has also been involved in making and selling black-and-white interlocking rubber wristbands throughout Europe with proceeds meant for fighting racism through anti-racism groups. The antiracism campaigns have been reinforced by FIFA, soccer's world governing body by passing an anti-racism legislation that provides for sanctioning Players, coaches and team officials during football matches for engaging in actions that are likely to promote racial prejudice. This legislation however still leaves the funs unregulated. Unfortunately it is this group that is involved in many incidences of racial discrimination. Due to the large number of fans during football matches, enforcing this legislation is very difficult as the officials are not able to monitor what is happening in the stands. Establishing the team whose funs are involved in racially discriminating activities is not easy to allowing for apportioning of blame. FIFA also suggested that players lining up before each game during world cup were to hold banners condemning racism, and, beginning with the quarterfinals, team captains were to read anti-racism messages before games. A special time was also set aside on the World Cup calendar giving room for two anti-discrimination days during the event. These antiracism campaigns were summed up in the World Cup's slogan: "A Time to Make Friends." Various racists groups like neo-Nazis and other racist groups still exists in Germany and these groups have continued to launch attack on black people and even blamed for attacks on black players and their funs whom they refer to as dark-skinned people . Persistent racism in Germany made the authorities to warn black visitors attending world cup to keep off villagers outside Berlin. Taunts by racists are aimed at getting opposing players angry and affecting their play and soccer players who have had a long experience which such racial prejudices advise that black players should learn to ignore such gestures to maintain a good shape during a match. Racial prejudices are part and parcel of such communities and a player responding to them risks even serious actions of racists like physical assault or worse death. Instead of struggling with the humiliations of racists insults and abuses, some p layers take this as a sign of provide and continue to stage outstanding performance to counter the humiliation. Talking about racism is a thorny issue even among the African-American teammates except for personal friends. (Stuart Sim, 2008). Conclusion. Soccer is a very popular football game that is perceived to unite people of all races and loved worldwide. It is however unfortunate that these players who stage outstanding performances are struggling with humiliation due to racial prejudices from certain corners of the world especially in European countries. Despite the severity of the problem, world football body and some government authorities have not stepped up enough measures to combat racial prejudice. Hooliganism at soccer matches provide an atmosphere within which racism thrives. Fighting at football matches is usually associated with racial insults like you dirty nigger or stupid African which is easily ignored as part of the hooliganism. Racial discrimination in football can range from physical and verbal insults like monkey chants, using gestures meant for racial incitement, restricted access to social facilities as well as entering football stadiums with racists banners. Europe is still prone to racial prejudice in the field of sports especially in Germany which is blamed for tolerating racial prejudice. This is evidenced by incidences like when a racist fan entered a stadium with a banner promoting racial discrimination in the presence of police men who failed to confisticate it or arrest him. There were also were also public racist campaigns by right-wing extremists against national players Gerald Asamoah and Patrick Owomoyela because they were black. Those arrested and charged with racial discrimination are subjected to very low fines hence promoting this vice. To stamp out the vice, governments and relevant football stakeholders need to come up with stiffer penalties for those promoting racial hatred. The antiracism campaigns should be incorporated in education policies and public awareness to appeal to even the younger generation. The media need not to heed to intimidation by sports officials threatening to exclude them from covering their matches and promote campaigns against racism. Work Cited Stuart Sim (2008). Beowulf - Analysis Of The Epic Essays - Beowulf, Geats, Free Essays
Beowulf - Analysis Of The Epic Essays - Beowulf, Geats, Free Essays Beowulf - Analysis of the Epic The Anglo-Saxon epic Beowulf is the most important work of Old English literature, and is well deserved of the distinction. The epic tells the story of a hero, a Scandinavian prince named Beowulf, who rids the Danes of the monster Grendel, a descendent of Cain, and of his exploits fighting Grendel?s mother and a Dragon. Throughout the epic, the Anglo-Saxon story teller uses many elements to build a certain depth to the characters. Just a few of the important character elements in Beowulf are Wealth & Honor, Biblical & Paganistic, and Man vs. Wild themes. Many of the characters in Beowulf are, like in most epics, defined by their status. But, in addition to status, the Anglo-Saxon culture also adds an element of honor. To the Anglo-Saxons, a character?s importance, as well as their wealth and status, where measured not only in monetary terms, but it was also measured in terms of honor, fame, and accomplishments. Hrothgar, king of the Danes, is one example of the Anglo-Saxon measurement of importance in Beowulf. In Canto 1 the story teller describes his wealth and importance, not as mounds of gold or jewels, but instead as his ability to ?[lead] the Danes to such glory.? and as his tendency to ?In battle, [leave] the common pasture untouched, and taking no lives.? Through this display of compassion for the commoner who doesn?t fight in battles, Hrothgar proves the full extent of his honor and therefore the extent of his wealth and status. Beowulf, the hero-prince, also proves his true wealth and status through his deeds as defender of the Danes.. As he fights and defeats Grendel, Beowulf Earns Fame and wealth from his companions, and from the Danes, but more importantly, he earns honor raising him to the level of an archetypal hero. Grendel, on the other hand, is the total opposite of Beowulf. He has no wealth, no honor, and he in infamous as an evil killer. This lack of wealth and honor defines Grendel as a symbol of evil and corruption. In addition to using Honor and wealth to define a character?s character, the story-teller(s) have incorporated alternating Biblical and Paganistic motifs in the epic-poem. The original Epic was obviously Paganistic due to the time period of it?s creation. But, as time wore on, the rewriting and touching up of the manuscripts by various sources including religious monks, caused the characters to have slight Christian characteristics. These Christian themes have become very important to the epic to add am element of depth that wouldn?t be possible in modern times due to the lost of the Anglo-Saxon culture and beliefs. An example of the Biblical motif in Beowulf is Grendel. Grendel it biblically described as evil in this excerpt: [ Grendel] was spawned in that slime, Conceived by a pair of those monsters born Of Cain, murderous creatures banished By God, punished forever for the crime Of Abel?s death. The Almighty drove Those demons out, and their exile was bitter, Shut away from men; they split Into a thousand forms of evilspirits And feinds, goblins, monsters, giants, A brood forever opposing the Lord?s Will, and again and again defeated. The Biblical reference in the epic has become a modern day archetypal motif, and serves to give the listener an idea of the extent of Grendel?s pure evil and gives a logical explanation for Grendel?s murderous behavior. This example, not only shows the evil in Grendel?s nature, but also the torture in his heart caused by his Banishment from God. It serves to give the reader an idea of why Grendel would kill the Danes for no reason other than their happiness. Beowulf also has a religious motif to his character. One example of this is in Canto 6 line 381 in which Hrothgar states, ?Our Holy Father had sent [Beowulf] as a sign of His grace, a mark of His favor, to help us defeat Grendel and end that terror.? This religious description shows Beowulf as a sort of messiah sent by god to save man from evil. But, more than that, since Beowulf is in fact not a messiah, this description shows the good in Beowulf?s heart and the purpose of his mission. Another Biblical reference in Beowulf

Comparisons of two Information Security Management Frameworks Essay
Comparisons of two Information Security Management Frameworks - Essay Example Security responsibilities in an organization are all-embracing that is why it is important to associate the employees in formulating the program. SQL information system management used in health care The health care information technology system in several instances is predisposed to various risks and threats among other vulnerabilities. The situation gets worse when such vices are channeled towards the information system targeting patients with life threatening conditions. Some of the risks, threats, and vulnerabilities include and are not limited to accessing public internet without authority, hacking resulting to penetration of IT infrastructure, and fire torching primary data (Rodrigues 56). In most instances, health-care centers have put in place web-based patient and physician portals to enable visibility in the organizations financial and clinical data. The physician portal is normally used for various purposes including viewing radiology and laboratory results, obtaining elec tronic medical records and completing charts. Similarly, the patient portal enables accessing patientââ¬â¢s information including test results, billing information, prescribed medication, scheduled appointments, and medical conditions. However, if secure coding of the web application is not implemented, vulnerabilities such as SQL injections and cross-site scripting are likely to occur. This occurs based on actions of exploitation from unauthorized users who may compromise sensitive information confidentiality via the internet (Gentile 69). Notable tools employed in the identification of healthcare related online risks include the Web inspect scanner by Hewlett, Web vulnerability scanner by Acunetix and the watchfire Appscan by IBM. Application of the above systems would then go ahead in selective selections of authentic databases, passwords, and user identities as far as the internet security is concerned. In order to tackle various threats and risks, sections of clinical system s have adopted wireless networks, which they use to present and obtain information at the point of care. For example, this has been applied at bedsides (Gentile 41). The wireless network policy enables the use of wireless network infrastructure to handle patientââ¬â¢s information systems. This kind of system with proper coding plays a significant role in ensuring that there is integrity, confidentiality, and reliable availability of patientââ¬â¢s information. If proper securing of information is not enhanced under such circumstances, it would greatly affect the organizations internal systems. The wireless network system ensures that proper regulations and procedures are put in place to handle the patientââ¬â¢s information systems. These include performance logs and network security. Training of steps in this field would then enable justified users such as permitted staff to understand encryptions and authentication of wireless mechanisms that are in use. To identify where u nauthorized access points and rogue users are located, system administrators should use wireless scanning tools. On the same note, hospitals offering free access to wireless network for the public must always ensure that the person accessing information is

Dental insurance Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words
Dental insurance - Article Example The core issue discussed relies on the information gathered with reference to the level in which the respondents accept or reject the of the thirty Current dental terminology codes (CDT) (Stafford et.al, 2010). Scholarly research insisted that among all the adults, the privately insured were more likely to have treated carries. This is contrary with reference to the case of the uninsured. Statistically, scholarly information indicates that 68.5% of private insurance and 56.9% had dental insurance. According to the study, above 80 % dental exams acceptance rate was recorded, inclusive of the insured and uninsured. First, the exams taken orally were highly rejected. The results of the study depict that most of the insured persons indicated a high rate of acceptance toward oral prophylaxis procedure (Stafford et.al, 2010). On the other side, the uninsured show less acceptance rate towards treatments. Statistically, the insured show 90% acceptance, against the 74.6 acceptance rate. Overall statistics gathered from the study indicate that 72% of all the patients accepted the treatments. Specifically, 75% of the insured persons accepted treatment. Alternatively, 68% of the uninsured rejected it (Stafford et.al, 2010). However, the results dictate that there is an affirmative correlation between the independent and dependent variable. Ideally, the independent variable is the status of insurance, and the dependent variable is the dental treatment. Stafford,Ã W.Ã L., Edenfield,Ã S.Ã M., Coulton,Ã K.Ã M., & Beiter,Ã T. (2010). Mexican society Essay Example for Free
Mexican society Essay Mariano Azuelaââ¬â¢s, The Underdogs, is full of characters that represent different sections of the Mexican society at the time of the Mexican Revolution around 1910 and each responds to the war according to their own circumstances and needs. The first such character is Demetrio Macias, a peace loving Indian, representing the poor peasants. His only interest is to protect what little he has. He is drawn into the revolution when he is being hunted by the soldiers of a political leader and he has to abandon his wife and child and watch the soldiers destroy his house. Demetrio responds by putting together a band of sharpshooting bandits who are wanted for various crimes they have committed At the start, Demetrio is full of noble ideas and wants to fight for the poor while taking from the rich, something like Robin Hood. The group is focused and meets with success. However as his group grows larger it becomes more difficult to control, because with each victory comes power and with that the demands. For instance, after each successful battle they feel justified in taking all girls above twelve years of age to ââ¬Å"serviceâ⬠them. As time goes on, the rebels themselves forget what they are fighting for and start taking from the rich and poor alike Luis Cervantes, is a student portraying the educated middle class. He is captured by Demetrioââ¬â¢s men and manages to convince them that is a deserter of Huertas army and was actually trying to join them. He is unhappy with the treachery, and corruption in the Huertasââ¬â¢ army. The unnecessary meanness of the soldiers, rape, burning of homes, looting, torture, murdering of children. 1 Luis is a young man with ideals and a vision for the future. He believes that doing away with the crooked politicians will make Mexico a better place for everyone. While he imparts his wisdom on the bandits, some of them speculate if that is indeed what they are really all about, while majority just dreams about the booty the next town will bring. Luisââ¬â¢ unsuccessful attempts at conveying his insight to the bandits eventually cause him to change his direction and go in search of a business venture instead. The next characters we meet in the story are two women, who symbolize the role of the fairer sex in the Mexican war. First there is Camilla, who provides services such as cooking, or caring for the wounded. Although initially she comes across as a meek person, we see eventually that she is really a strong woman who has a major role to play in Demetrioââ¬â¢s life. Finally, there is ââ¬Å"War Paint. â⬠A very jealous and bold woman, who is always ready to rob anyone in her path. She uses sex to manipulate men and get what she wants. For example, at one point in the story Demetrio is ready to take her to a hotel after drinking heavily. She challenges his manhood by saying that a real man of his standing would find the best house in town, take it over by force if necessary and spend the night there. Thus, they spend the night in one of the best houses in town, and War Paint proceeds to rob it after entertaining Demetrio. It seems to me that the only person somewhat sincere with the revolution is Demetrio. After all he is the only one not willing to run away. He stands his ground and fights for what he believes in, despite the fact that the importance and force of revolution had lost its steam, and knowing in the end that he is outnumbered and will not survive. 1Cogan, Allan .
